Schedule Changes, Grassroots ESA Washington, DC Update

ESA reform faces possible make-or-break legislative action the week of July 18th through the 22nd.

The success or failure of ESA reform will probably hang in the balance that week. I hope you and your friends can be there to swing the balance toward meaningful reform.

*****The schedule has changed because of Congressional scheduling.

The Grassroots ESA Coalition meeting will be at the Best Western Pentagon starting at 10:00 am Monday as previously planned. It will end a little after 1:00 pm and we’ll all go to the Longworth House Office Building, room 1334.

The General ESA Meeting will start at 2:00 pm Monday, July 18th. At this time it is planned for the old Merchant Marine and Fisheries hearing room down the hall from the Resources Committee Hearing Room in the Longworth Building. The room number is Longworth 1334.

That will run to 5:00 pm and possibly a little later. There will be key speakers from the Administration.

On July 19th the General ESA meeting will begin at a new time, 9:00 am at the same hearing room we started the previous day, Longworth 1334.

There will be a number of special events built around Congressional activities and special receptions. If you were ever to come to Washington, DC regarding the Endangered Species Act, this is the week to do it.

Lots of people have already signed up for the Grassroots ESA Coalition meeting and the General ESA Meeting. We need you to send us a confirmation. These meetings are by invitation only.

It is critical that you make your plane and hotel reservations to include staying until Friday, July 22nd. It will be worth it. Congress is adjusting every day but you can count on a big week.

This is going to be an amazing week. You won’t want to miss out. This is your chance to make history.

Make your reservations now.

There have been some schedule changes. A review is appropriate.

The week of July 18th looks like it will have a lot of Endangered Species Act action in Congress. We still cannot give you the details at this time, but it should be understood that if you care about what happens with the Endangered Species Act in the House of Representatives, you should be in Washington, DC from Monday, July 18th until Friday, July 22nd.

You should plan to fly to Washington, DC on Sunday, July 17th and leave on Friday, July 22nd if you can stay that long.

I apologize for being so cryptic, but that is how things are with Congress. You won’t want to miss out on this week if you care about the ESA.

We’re planning two meetings.

-----1. The first meeting will be for the Grassroots ESA Coalition only and is set for Monday, July 18th at the Best Western Pentagon in Arlington. It will start at 10:00 am and run to a little after 1:00 pm. Attendance is by invitation.

We will keep a list at the door. If you are not sure whether you are on the Grassroots ESA List, call Chuck Cushman at (360) 687-3087. Or send an e-mail to < [email protected] > If you simply want to be invited to the Grassroots ESA Coalition meeting, send an e-mail to the same place.

Please send an e-mail confirmation if you are planning to come to the Grassroots ESA Coalition meeting. Send it to < [email protected] >

-----2. The second meeting will be a General ESA meeting open to others we will invite. There will be key speakers from the Administration and various Congressional offices. You will meet the right people and get the whole scoop.

All Grassroots ESA Coalition folks will be welcome at both meetings.
The second meeting will now begin at 2:00 pm, Monday July 18th and run to approximately 5:00 pm. That meeting will be in Longworth 1334. The General ESA meeting will reconvene Tuesday, July 19th at 9:00 am and run until approximately 1:30 pm.

Please send an e-mail confirmation if you are planning to come to the general ESA meeting to < [email protected] > You can send one confirmation for both meetings but be sure to specify it is for both meetings.

Other events will be planned around these meetings including several receptions and of course, important Congressional action Wednesday, July 20th and beyond.

Outline:

What: ESA meetings and Congressional activity.

When: Week of July 18th through at least Wednesday, July 20th and continuing until Friday, July 22nd.

Where: Best Western Pentagon, 2480 S. Glebe Rd, Arlington, Virginia. (703) 979-4400. Meeting room rate $99. This is on Interstate 395 right at the Glebe Rd exit. Use the words American Land Rights to get the better rate. The DEADLINE for the special room rate is July 8th. The hotel is setting up the special account. If they have any problem, ask for Lorrie Donovan, extension 1406.

Some events will take place at the Longworth House Office Building, Room 1334.

Other events: There will be other events planned for the evenings this week. Both Monday and Tuesday will have receptions and other special events. There may be more events scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. Relaxed food events with wine and talk. Great fun. You won’t want to miss out. These events will be by invitation only so be sure to get your confirmations in.

 >>>Also, if you have suggestions for new people to invite to either meeting, send me a note. Don’t worry about whether they have or have not been invited. You might give us a name we already have. It doesn’t matter. We’ll check them.
It would be helpful if you can include a phone number, fax number and e-mail.

>>>We’re working on the agenda for both meetings. If you have suggestions for topics and/or speakers you would like to have, please share that too.

Thank you in advance for your help.
